Sen. Aniekan is currently serving his first-term as a Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).  Prior to his election to the 10th National Assembly, Senator Bassey was the 12th Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly(2019) He joined Mainstream politics in 2014 and had served in several capacities, including Chairman House Committee on Science and Technology 2018, Chairman House committee on Parliamentary  Affairs, and also Chairman House Services Committee.
